Why Am I Always Anxious? (A Sister-to-Sister Chat)

Hey… I know that feeling.

That constant buzz in your chest.
Your brain running ahead of you, thinking ten steps into the worst-case scenario.
That weird mix of “nothing’s wrong” but also “something’s definitely not right.”

First things first — you’re not broken.

Anxiety isn’t random. It’s your mind trying to protect you… it’s just got a bit overenthusiastic about it.

Somewhere along the way, your brain learned that staying alert = staying safe.
So now it scans everything. Conversations. Messages. Silence. The future. The past.
It’s like having a smoke alarm that goes off when you make toast.

And it’s exhausting.

Sometimes it comes from pressure — trying to get everything right, be everything to everyone.
Sometimes it’s from overthinking — replaying things, second guessing yourself, wondering if you said the wrong thing.
Sometimes it’s deeper — stuff you’ve been through, things you’ve had to hold together quietly.

And sometimes… it’s just your nervous system stuck on “high alert” for no clear reason at all.

But here’s the bit no one really says clearly enough:

You don’t need to eliminate anxiety to feel better.
You just need to learn how to steady yourself when it shows up.

Because fighting it usually makes it louder.

Next time it hits, try this instead of panicking about the panic:

Slow yourself down. Literally.
Unclench your jaw. Drop your shoulders. Breathe in through your nose, out through your mouth.
Look around the room and name a few things you can see. Bring yourself back to now, not the “what if.”

And gently remind yourself:

“I’m safe. This is just a feeling. It will pass.”

You don’t have to solve your whole life in that moment.
You just have to get through that wave.

And you can.

Also — and this matters — you’re allowed to talk about it.
You’re allowed to say “I’m not okay today.”
You’re allowed to need support without having to justify it.

You’re carrying more than you think.

But you’re also stronger than your brain gives you credit for.

You’re not the only one who feels like this, even if it feels like you are.
And you’re definitely not stuck like this forever.

We’ll steady it. Bit by bit. Together.

Alright?
